The village of Tangmo is located at the base of the Yellow Mountains, about 30km from the city of Huangshan in the Anhui Province of China.
Founded during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the village developed steadily during the following dynasties, and it has mostly retained it’s rural character. Unlike Xidi and Honcun, more renowned Hui villages listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site, tourism is not the main economic source of income for Tangmo.
The village has two lakes located near the east entrance. The small West Lake stands next to the smaller East Lake. The lakes were constructed by a rich inhabitant for his old mother, who intended to remind her of the beautiful lakes of Hangzhou.
The village is divided in half by a small creek flowing through the middle, with buildings wrapping around the waterfront on each side. Walking along one of the sides offers a perfect view of traditional dwellings that were built during the Qing Dinasty.
The village represents a nice example of Hui Architecture, common in the southern part of the Anhui Province. Smaller and more modest than Xidi and Hongcun, Tangmo enjoys less frenzied tourist invasions, which has preserved the authenticity of the inhabitants’ lifestyle.
The village is located about 30km from the city of Hangshan, but it is very close to the access point for climbing the Yellow Mountains.
There is no direct bus from the city to Tangmo so you will need to go from the Huangshan Bus Station and catch the bus to Qiankou. Once there, catch a taxi to reach Tangmo village.
